We are the stepping stone to independent living

|
Our Emergency Shelter provides a place where homeless men and women find warm, safe refuge from the streets. In a harm reduction approach to intervention, we encourage participation in our on-site services such as case management, mental health services, women’s group and our health clinic. The Emergency Shelter is open seven days a week from 4:00P.M. to 8:00A.M. Monday-Friday and twenty four hours on Saturday and Sunday. The Shelter operates on a first come first serve basis. We do not take referrals but strongly encourage that you call at 4:30P.M. to get a bed or a mat for the night. Once a bed is assigned, you are required to be present at the shelter every day between 6:00P.M. and 7:30P.M. or you will lose the bed. Limiting Guests’ Stay Time It is the intent of this policy and procedure to define the responsibilities and structures for guests at the at shelter that will enable our guests to progress through a continuum of care towards self sufficiency. It is the intent of the shelter to be an “emergency” site and therefore, all beds will be on a first come first serve basis for those who are not compliant with program rules and regulations. LSA defines emergency shelter as a stay of not more than ninety days. Shelter guests are allowed a primary stay of ninety days if, during this period, they are engaged in programs that provide support services. Such services are to include but not be limited to: Benefits access, mental health assessment and evaluation, substance abuse treatment and/or counseling, AA or NA meetings, housing search, job searching or training, working, volunteering, and or enrolled in school. Guests who are not engaging in services and/or making a good faith attempt to do so, will be banned from the shelter at the end of ninety days for a period of not less than thirty days. If at the end of thirty days, the guests would like to re-enter the shelter, they must engage in services as noted previously. Guests who refuse to engage in services or make any attempt to move beyond the shelter system will be out of compliance with this policy and subject to disciplinary actions up to and including permanent banning. The Transition Program The transition program is the stepping stone to sobriety at the shelter. It requires individuals who are interested in their recovery to provide urine screens three times a week and engaging in counseling, attend relapse prevention and substance abuse educational sessions. They are also required to do twenty hours of chores at the shelter each week. Guests who are compliant with all aspects of the program are moved on to the Y-Initiative program across the street from the shelter. The Y-Initiative provides six months of subsidized single room housing and other support services to homeless men and women. It is a first step beyond the shelter for sober guests who are motivated and prepared to develop the skills necessary to live independently. |
